The eBat project encompasses a set of technologies to enhance the research environment in Life Science laboratories to improve equipment control, communication, and education. We are studying the use of these technological improvements by the local community of researchers. In this paper we report upon the system architecture and our observations over the course of a semester. Our users quickly adopted the technology to form an online research community to supplement their real-world interactions. We are currently exploring the expansion of these technologies to accommodate long-distance collaboration in the life sciences arena.
