(Submission #12)

Summary

Internet/computer use and addiction has been a popular research area since the 90s. Studies of Internet addiction are usually conducted in the US. However, computer/Internet use and addiction is a world wide phenomenon. Our study provides findings from a major study of computer/Internet use and addiction among teenagers and Internet cafe visitors in Turkey. Some 983 visitors to Internet cafes in Turkey completed a survey questionnaire. Results show that the Internet cafe visitors are usually teenagers, mostly middle and high-school students who use computer and Internet applications like chat, e-mail, browsing and games. Teenagers visit Internet cafes to spend time with friends and use the computers. In addition, 30% of cafe visitors indicated that they had an Internet addiction and 20% mentioned Internet problems. We discuss the nature of Internet/computer usage and addiction in Turkey, the types of activities that the teenagers are performing in an Internet cafe, their reasons for being there, the percentage of self-awareness about Internet addiction, and the lack of control of applications in the cafe.
