Over the last several decades, digital technologies have connected billions of people in astonishing new ways. Now there is a growing realizing that connectedness alone is not the point. A longtime obsession with technological means is giving way to a new focus on ends. What’s the point of digital connectedness? Is it serving human needs and aspirations, or undermining them? Drawing on his book Hamlet’s BlackBerry and his current work at the MIT Media Lab, William Powers will discuss the rise of “technological humanism” and what it means for the future.
