Kim to Receive ASIS&T Outstanding Teacher Award

The Association for Information Science & Technology (ASIS&T) is delighted to announce that Jeonghyun “Annie” Kim, PhD of the University of North Texas is the 2020 recipient of the ASIS&T Outstanding Information Science Teacher Award. The award’s purpose is to recognize the unique teaching contribution of an individual as a teacher of information science.

Professor Kim was selected as the winner from among a pool of outstanding candidates who were judged based on these criteria: evidence of sustained and unique contributions to teaching information science; impact on students, colleagues, and institutions; innovative and imaginative teaching materials and methods; professional association activities related to teaching excellence; research activities related to teaching excellence; and previous teaching awards.

In nominating Dr. Kim for this award, student Anna Roeschly wrote, “Dr. Kim is a beloved teacher who works tirelessly to ensure that her students are given the best possible education. Her enthusiasm for information science is evident in her lectures, class discussions, and her research. Dr. Kim’s care and compassion for her students is evident in everything she does. While her research record reflects her passion for information science education, her direct impact on her students through her teaching is most reflective of her drive towards teaching excellence. Her excellent student reviews show how effective her teaching methods are. Dr. Kim goes beyond the call of duty for every single one of her students…I can think of no better individual to deserve the title of ASIS&T Outstanding Information Science Teacher of 2020. Simply put, Dr. Kim is an excellent information science teacher and deserves to be recognized as such.”

Another student, Deborah Caldwell, wrote, “She is a paragon of leadership for students at the University of North Texas (UNT), and I am pleased to have the opportunity to express my appreciation and admiration for her here. Based on both her independent research and her commitment to student success, I believe she is the best candidate for this award.”

Dr. Hsia-Ching Chang wrote, “Dr. Kim is an excellent instructor, who teaches Digital Curation and Digital Libraries by linking theory to practice and provides hands-on examples of how the course material relates to current digital curation practice and digital library development. Her lectures are highly organized and always presentations of state-of-the-art material. Her online courses used the closed captioning for her recorded lectures, which seemed to represent her efforts to accommodate and reach students in as many ways as possible. Dr. Kim’s courses have great reputation and received nearly perfect student evaluation scores.”

Upon learning of her selection as the 2020 ASIS&T Outstanding Information Science Teacher Award winner, Dr. Kim said, “I’m incredibly touched to be recognized for something I love and enjoy doing. I’m thankful to my students who constantly motivate and inspire me. I’m also thankful to my institution, department, and ASIS&T for their support and recognition for my work..”

Dr. Kim will receive her award at the 2020 meeting of the Association for Information Science & Technology (ASIS&T) which will be held virtually, October 25-29, 2020.
