Baker (1920-2005) had an impactful career in chemical information science.  He worked as a chemical supervisor at DuPont (1942-1945); associate editor at Chemical Abstracts Service (CAS) (1946-1957); Director, CAS (1958-1986); Associate Director, CAS (1958); Acting Manager, Columbus, OH office, ACS (1972); Emeritus director, ACS.  Baker was interested in chemical literature, documentation, communication, research development and planning.

Awards received:

College of Engineering, Ohio State University: Distinguished Alumnus Award (1970)

ACS: Patterson-Crane Award for meritorious contributions to the field of chemical literature, especially the documentation of chemistry (1979); Skolnik Award, for leading Chemical Abstracts Service from the conventional indexing of the 1950s to an information and retrieval system that provides direction for the entire information industry (1986)
