Theory and Standards: Debating the New Framework for Information Literacy in Higher Education

The release of the New Framework for Information Literacy in Higher Education has occurred amidst a storm of discussion and debate, prompting an Open Letter Regarding the Framework for Information Literacy for Higher Education. While the Standards for Information Literacy in Higher Education have provided a model that maps nicely to curriculum assessments, the New Framework is more theory based, with little provision for mapping theory to practice. This moderated panel will explore both sides of this issue: one pro-Standards, and one pro-Framework.

Beth Boatright is Information Services and Instruction Librarian at Helmke Library, Indiana University-Purdue University, Fort Wayne. Beth graduated from the Indiana University School of Library Science in 2009 with a digital library specialization. She was selected as a 2015 Emerging Leader by the Reference and User Services Association.

 

 

 

Willie Miller is a Librarian at Indiana University – Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI) University Library, where he serves as subject liaison to the School of Informatics & Computing and the School of Journalism. In addition, Miller leads the library’s Campus Outreach Group, which develops outreach programming and media to promote library services to students, faculty, and staff. His research interests focus on library outreach, instructional technology, and library instruction. Miller is a 2010 graduate of the Indiana University School of Library & Information Science, an Indiana’s Librarians Leading in Diversity Scholar, and a 2012 American Library Association Emerging Leader.

 

Nina Collins is a Reference Librarian at McMillen Library, Indiana Tech, Fort Wayne. She has served as Chapter Secretary for the ASIS&T Indiana Chapter since 2013, and is a 2015 ASIS&T New Leader.
