AM25 Workshop

Knowledge Organization Meets Artificial Intelligence in Theory and Practice (SIG-CMR)

Explore how the foundational principles of Knowledge Organization intersect with recent developments in Artificial Intelligence. This workshop combines conceptual grounding with practical experience, guiding participants in the use of prompt engineering and generative AI tools to support tasks such as metadata generation, classification analysis, and domain analysis.

More about this Workshop

This full-day workshop investigates the intersection of Knowledge Organization (KO) and Artificial Intelligence (AI) through an integration of theoretical exploration and applied practice. The morning session will introduce foundational concepts in AI, review core principles of KO as a specialized domain within information science, and explore the connections between the two through a series of short case studies from researchers and practitioners. The morning session will conclude with a tutorial on prompt engineering, a quickly emerging aspect of AI practice that lends itself to simple instruction and demonstration. In the afternoon session participants will work together in small groups, applying their new skills through guided exercises using generative AI tools to carry out prototypical KO tasks in a domain of their choosing, including metadata generation, evaluation of classification structures, and domain analysis. Participants will then come together to discuss insights, concerns, and future opportunities for AI and KO.

Learning Outcomes

  • Demonstrate understanding of core generative AI concepts and develop competence in prompt engineering within Generative AI environments.
  • Analyze theoretical and methodological intersections between Knowledge Organization and Artificial Intelligence and be prepared to engage in ongoing discussions and collaborations around AI and KO.
  • Apply AI-based techniques to support Knowledge Organization tasks, including metadata generation, classification evaluation, and domain analysis.
