AM25 Workshop
Mapping Research and Practices on AI in the Public Sector
This interactive workshop maps current information science research of AI in the public sector context (e.g.,the fire service, law enforcement, public health, local government). Join researchers and public-sector professionals to explore frameworks, share ongoing work, and build connections across the ASIS&T community.
More about this Workshop
This workshop examines opportunities to research how AI is adopted and used in public services. The primary goal is to map current AI research and practices in public services (e.g., emergency, law enforcement) within the ASIS&T community, build a network of researchers and practitioners, and develop shared resources (e.g., concepts, frameworks, best practices) that foster real-world impact. The workshop begins with presentations of case studies, including preliminary findings from our NSF-funded research in fire departments and 911 centers. Participants will present their own case studies and join a codesign exercise to map case findings, theoretical frameworks, implementation challenges, and strategies for adopting AI in the public sector. Through structured activities and small-group discussions, attendees will collectively visualize theoretical approaches, challenges, opportunities, and cases for public-sector AI. This collaborative workshop aims to spark new research avenues and partnerships that advance our understanding of AI’s roles in public services.
Learning Outcomes
- Analyze current research trends, theoretical frameworks, and key information problems in AI adoption within public sectors (fire, law enforcement, EMS, social services, public health), identifying both opportunities and challenges created by these technologies.
- Develop scientific methodologies and practical strategies for addressing common challenges in implementing, using, and managing AI systems in public service contexts, with special attention to engaging diverse stakeholders.
- Establish and nurture a community of practice connecting researchers and practitioners working with public-sector AI implementation, fostering knowledge sharing and collaboration within ASIS&T.
