AM25 Work-posium
Social Media Research, Artificial Intelligence, Large Language Models, Crisis Informatics, AI Ethics (SIG-SM)
This hands-on workshop includes a tutorial on using open-source LLMs for social media research, with adaptable code for your own datasets, followed by a best student paper competition on AI and social media topics. Explore recent developments in AI-based social media research, learn new tools, and connect with an interdisciplinary research community.
More about this Workshop
This half-day workshop will explore the growing role of AI and Large Language Models (LLMs) in social media research, with a focus on timely topics such as crisis informatics, mis/disinformation, public opinion, and the ethical use of AI in LIS research. Building on the 2024 SIG-SM panel and workshop, this session will examine both the potential of LLMs to support large-scale analysis of social media data and the challenges and opportunities associated with issues such as training data quality, model biases, and the privacy concerns with these tools. The workshop will: 1) explore the use of AI/LLMs for real-time and scalable social media analysis, 2) address ethical and privacy concerns in AI-driven research, 3) feature recent work from attendees on AI methods and social media, and 4) support early-career researchers in using these methods responsibly. Participants from LIS, HCI, data science, and related fields will work together to develop practical and responsible ways to use AI for social media research with real-world implications.
