New Leaders Program

Purpose of the Program

The purpose of the New Leader program is to identify and nurture future leaders in the Association.


The applicant must meet the following qualifications:

  • Applicants must have been ASIS&T members in good standing for up to (3) years at the time the award is made and be a current member at the time of application.
  • Applicants must be willing and able to make a commitment to the New Leaders Program of up to 8 hours per month for 12 consecutive months.
  • New Leaders may apply for a second consecutive year. No New Leader may serve for more than two years.

Submissions will be judged on the following criteria:

  • The potential for future leadership within ASIS&T
  • Demonstrated leadership experience and potential
  • Alignment between the candidate’s interests and association priorities
Application Process

Applications must be submitted by 11:59 pm US Pacific Time on the deadline date via the designated online portal.

Applications must include:

  • A current CV
  • One (1) letter of reference from another ASIS&T member that speaks to the candidate’s leadership experience and potential (optional).
  • A statement (no more than 800 words) that addresses the following:
    • Any previous involvement in ASIS&T and the benefits the applicant has received from their ASIS&T membership;
    • The applicant’s leadership experiences, including a) leadership positions held in ASIS&T and other organizations and b) leadership qualities or skills the applicant possesses;
    • Why the applicant wants to participate in the New Leaders Program, including a) what they hope to contribute to ASIS&T and b) what they hope to gain professionally and personally; and o Why the applicant has selected their three placement choices and if there is a specific project or goal associated with their selections;
    • Why the applicant chose the possible placements that were chosen.

Along with the application, applicants must select three pre-defined projects identified by ASIS&T Committees, Chapters, and SIGs that they would like to pursue during their year as a New Leader.


The Jury will be chaired by the President-Elect of ASIS&T. The remainder of the Jury will be comprised of the SIG Cabinet Director, the Chapter Assembly Director, the Executive Director of ASIS&T, and up to three prior New Leaders or New Leader Mentors.

Selection Process
  • The jury will utilize both asynchronous scoring and synchronous discussion to arrive at a final decision.
  • Through the evaluation platform or system, jury members will rate each nominee on a scale of 10 (highest) to 1 (lowest) on each of the criteria listed above.
  • The jury chair shall tally the votes, with each of the categories weighted equally.
  • In the event of a tie that cannot be resolved through synchronous discussion, the jury chair will identify an additional jury member to break the tie. This new jury member will evaluate only the tied nominations and will rate them using the same criteria used by the other jurors.
  • The number of applications accepted each year will be determined based on the number of projects available and the availability of funding.
Nature of the Award

New Leaders will be assigned to work closely with a current leader in ASIS&T. One or more mentors will be selected for each awardee, based on the unit to which the awardee is assigned and the project on which they will be working. The award consists of a US$500 stipend. In addition, awardees will receive free conference registration for the year of their participation in the program (excluding tutorials, workshops and other special events). Attendance at the Annual Meeting is encouraged but not required. However, virtual attendance during the leadership session held during the Annual Conference is required.

Potential Projects for the 2019 New Leader Class include:

  • Membership Committee: Build a repository of member testimonials leading to a membership value statement
  • Research Engagement Committee: Build a list of funders in information science and build a section of the website focused on research resources
  • SIG MET: Develop a library of resources and drive online discussion
  • Other SIG TBD: Develop a library of resources and drive online discussion
  • Chapter Assembly: Develop a plan to grow relationships between student and regional chapters
  • ASIS&T HQ: Help Develop Content and Structure of ASIS&T Websites
  • ASIS&T President: Support ASIS&T Strategic Planning Process
Mentor Expectations
  • Meet at least monthly with the New Leader via video conference
  • Work with the New Leader on a project that addresses a problem or issue central to the Association.
  • Provide New Leader with advice and guidance in areas of interest to the New Leader, which may include professional advancement, leadership opportunities within ASIS&T, etc.
  • Identify opportunities for the New Leader to further engage with ASIS&T as a volunteer and facilitate that engagement by making appropriate introductions to other ASIS&T leaders.
  • Complete a year-end evaluation of the New Leader program based on the Mentor’s experience.
New Leader Expectations
  • Meet at least monthly with the Mentor
  • Spend up to 8 hours per month pursuing a project that addresses a problem or issue central to the Association.
  • Attend all leadership webinars and the leadership session at the Annual Meeting, either in person or via video conference.
  • Prepare a final report at the end of the year detailing the New Leader experience.
  • Complete a year-end evaluation of the New Leader program based on the New Leader’s experience.
  • Be willing to serve as a Jury member in the years following service as a New Leader. Project Identification Following the Annual Meeting each year, ASIS&T components (SIGs, Chapters, and Committees) will be invited to propose meaningful projects that a New Leader could pursue over the course of a year giving approximately 8 hours per month to the effort. The proposed projects will be vetted through the Board of Directors to ensure the projects align with Association priorities and the strategic plan. The final list of projects will be included in the call for applications.
