ESC History

European Student Chapter of ASIS&T (ASIS&T ESC)

The history, as the founding students remember it, dates back to the year of 2000, when Emil Levine engaged a number of students by talking about ASIS&T at the Libraries in the Digital Age (LIDA) conference (http://www.ffos.hr/lida). Every year ASIS&T was more and more present at LIDA, also thanks to efforts of Tatjana Aparac Jelušić, Tefko Saračević, and a number of other ASIS&T members who participated in organizing activities: Sanda Erdelez, Julian Warner, Christine Borgman, Gary Marchionini, to name the few. These and similar activities, also initiated by Michel Menou, led to more and more European students joining ASIS&T. In 2002 European Chapter of ASIS&T awarded Koraljka Golub a travel to ASIS&T annual meeting. The year later Imma Subirats Coll was chosen as the best LIDA 2003 student paper author and was given a free membership in ASIS&T. Jonathan Levitt and Mabrouka El Hachani joined Koraljka and Imma in the team to start the European student chapter 2004. With strong support and help by Michel Menou, Emil Levine, Tatjana Aparac Jelušić and Tony Bull, among others, other European student members of ASIS&T joined in efforts to create their own organization.

The establishment of the European Student Chapter of ASIS&T was welcomed and approved by the ASIS&T Executive Board on May 27, 2005.

Current initiatives and activities of ASIS&T ESC involve: ASIS&T ESC’s electronic mailing lists which serve as a forum for the current student members; monthly discussion topics; newsletter; Web site at http://www.asist.org/Chapters/Student/esc/; fund raising for European students to attend annual meetings and conferences in Europe such as LIDA, possibly through best student paper competitions; promoting the chapter at conferences, through leaflets and discussions with (potential) members; promoting the chapter through country representatives.
