Continuing the RDAP Summit Conversation

https://asistdl.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/journal/23739223Since 2010, ASIS&T has hosted the Research Data Access & Preservation (RDAP) Summit, an annual event bringing together researchers, librarians, managers, scientists, policy makers, and teachers who are passionate about preserving and ensuring access to research data. The 2014 RDAP Summit was held March 26-28 in San Diego, California, and the August/September Issue of the ASIS&T Bulletin includes a Special Section dedicated to continuing the conversation started at RDAP14. This Special Section was edited by me (Lizzy Rolando, your faithful SIG-DL Treasurer/Secretary) and Jennifer Doty, Research Data Librarian at Emory Library.

In this special Issue of the Bulletin you’ll find the following:

  • An Introduction and Summit overview from Program Chair Andrew Johnson;
  • A recap of the panel that discussed establishing Research Data Management programs on a shoestring budget
  • (See Bulletin Archives);
  • A recap of the panel dedicated to discussing the collaborations and tensions often experienced when multiple institutions and units work together to provide data management support (See Bulletin Archives)
  • An overview of the panel dedicated to updates from four NSF-funded DataNet Projects – DataOne, SEAD, Terra Populous, and the DataNet Federation Consortium (See Bulletin Archives);
  • A deep dive into the panel that convened funding agency representatives from the NSF, NOAA, and NIH to discuss agency responses to the 2013 Memo requiring public access to the results of federally-funded research (See Bulletin Archives);
  • A panel recap from the group of data specialists who worked with the Inter-university Consortium for Political and Social Research (ICPSR) to apply ICPSR curation best practices to local data collections (See Bulletin Archives);
  • An overview of the lightning talks given at the Summit, including highlights from each presentation (See Bulletin Archives);
  • A more in-depth look at one of the Summit’s posters, which discussed some of the ways that the Librarians at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign are promoting metadata for research data management (See Bulletin Archives).

Want even more RDAP!? Slides from the 2014 Summit are available on SlideShare. Also, every Issue of the Bulletin includes a “RDAP Review,” a column dedicated to discussing research data access and preservation. The Issue before the RDAP Summit special edition included a column describing OpenICPSR and how this community repository is working to support researchers who need to comply with funding agency requirements for data preservation and sharing, and the current issue of the Bulletin includes a piece all about promoting University Research Data Management Services from Sara Mannheimer.
