Dr. Devendra Potnis - Use of Theories and Models in Conducting LIS Research

Abstract:

Dr. Potnis will demonstrate how his peer-reviewed research publications in top-tier journals employed interdisciplinary theories and models for (1) managing LIS research projects, (2) proposing research questions, (3) proposing and testing hypotheses in explanatory studies, (4) proposing and testing mathematical equations in exploratory studies, (5) thematic coding, (6) conceptual content analysis, (7) open coding, (8) grounded theory analysis, (9) analyzing and comparing multiple case examples, (10) deriving hypotheses as an end product, and (11) answering practice-based research questions.

About Dr. Devendra Potnis:

Devendra Potnis’ ICT for development research focuses on access to and use of (a) information tools (e.g., mobile phones, personal safety wearable devices), (b) information resources (e.g., e-Books, information systems, social media), and (c) information services (e.g., mobile money, IBM’s Spoken Web) for creating value for individuals (e.g., disabled students, library patrons, slum-dwellers), communities (e.g., mothers in rural America, farmers in developing countries), and organizations (e.g., microfinance institutions, libraries). He has published research in the Government Information Quarterly, Information Processing & Management, International Journal of Information Management, IT for Development, JASIS&T, LIS Research, Telematics and Informatics, The Information Society, and other reputed journals. His papers have won the Best Paper Award from ASIS&T SIG-Social Media and ALISE/Wynar Paper Competition. IMLS, OCLC, and ALISE funded his research. ASIS&T recognized his service with the “Member of the Year” award. Under his leadership, SIG-III won the “SIG of the Year” award in 2021.

Dr. Shafiq Ur Rehman - Managing Qualitative Research with NVivo

Abstract:

Dr. Rehman will demonstrate how the NVivo works for analyzing the qualitative data in research. This demonstration will lead how to set up a project, NVivo’s workspace (Interface views), create and navigate around a project. It will focus on data feeding, data accessing and reading, creating nodes, data coding, searching, tree map, cluster analysis, word trees and new models. This will be followed by practical question and answer session.

About Dr. Shafiq Ur Rehman:

Dr. Shafiq Ur Rehman completed PhD in Library and Information Science from the Charles de Gaulle University – Lille III, France, with the highest distinction in 2012. He has more than 24 years of professional, teaching and administrative experience at various universities and academic institutions across different countries such as France, Pakistan, and Saudi Arabia. He is actively engaged in research and have published more than 90 research papers. Among them, over 70 have been published/accepted in peer-reviewed journals and presented 17 research papers at various national and international conferences. He has conducted training on various research and reference management tools and served as a resource person in more than 650 workshops. Furthermore, he has delivered onsite and online training related to 35 training modules to more than 1500 university faculty members and researchers.

Md. Anwarul Islam

Md. Anwarul Islam is an Associate Professor at the Department of Information Science and Library Management, University of Dhaka. He received a Ph.D. from the School of Knowledge Science, JAIST, Japan. His primary research areas are KM, information behavior, and informetrics. He was a visiting fellow at iSchool, SLAIS@UBC, Canada; ACRC Fellow at NTU, Singapore and VLIR-UOS Scholar at the University of Antwerp, Belgium. He is a New Leaders Awardee of the Association for Information Science and Technology (ASIS&T) and received the James M. Cretsos leadership award in 2021. Anwar has held various leadership positions in ASIS&T. He is now serving as Co-Chair of SIG-III, Past Chair of SIG-KM and advisor of the South Asia Chapter of ASIS&T.
