Oh to Receive Outstanding Information Science Teacher Award
The Association for Information Science & Technology (ASIS&T) is pleased to announce Kyong Eun Oh as the recipient of the 2025 ASIS&T Outstanding Information Science Teacher Award. Since 1980, this annual award has honored the unique teaching contributions of exceptional teachers of information science.
Oh is an Associate Professor (Full Professor as of July 1) and Director of the PhD Program in the School of Library and Information Science at Simmons University. Dr. Oh’s research areas include personal information management, human information behavior, and information organization. She studies how people manage and organize their digital files and how people use and interact with information in everyday life. She teaches courses in information organization, metadata, and statistics. Dr. Oh serves on the Governing Board of the Dublin Core Metadata Initiative (DCMI) and the Editorial Board of Frontiers in Research Metrics and Analytics. She is a Distinguished Member of ASIS&T.
In her nomination letter, Sanda Erdelez, Professor and Dean of the School of Library and Information Science at Simmons University, wrote, “Kyong Eun Oh exemplifies the qualities of an Outstanding Library Science Teacher with her ability to engage and educate her students, in person and online. Dr. Oh has been praised by her colleagues and students for her ability to present complex material in a clear and approachable manner, breaking down larger concepts and building a strong foundation for education and research for students at the masters and doctoral level.
Deeth Ellis, Doctoral candidate at Simmons University, wrote in support of Oh’s nomination, “Because of Dr. Oh’s help I knew how to approach the data analysis and clearly convey the findings. A few months after completing the final write-up, ‘Investigating Principals’ Perceptions of the Role of School Librarians: A Mixed Methods Study’ was published in The Journal of Library Administration — definitely a testament to Dr. Oh and her strength as an advisor and instructor to a doctoral student and novice researcher!”
Former student Yuko Sato added, “Professor Oh's profound empathy for her students is remarkable. She was always there for her students, offering guidance, extra help, and a warm, welcoming environment where everyone felt comfortable asking questions. Her encouragement and belief in her students made all the difference, helping them overcome challenges and feel like they truly belonged.”
Upon learning of her selection as the 2025 ASIS&T Outstanding Information Science Teacher Award winner, Oh said, “I am truly honored to receive this award. I would like to express my heartfelt thanks to my students and colleagues for their support and for nominating me. I am deeply grateful to the teachers and mentors who have guided and inspired me throughout my life. I also thank the Awards Committee and ASIS&T for this meaningful recognition.”
Oh was selected as the winner from among a pool of outstanding candidates who were judged based on these criteria: evidence of sustained and unique contributions to teaching information science; impact on students, colleagues, and institutions; innovative and imaginative teaching materials and methods; professional association activities related to teaching excellence; research activities related to teaching excellence; and previous teaching awards.
Oh will receive the award during the 2025 meeting of ASIS&T which will be held 14-18 November 2025 in Crystal City, VA.
