Meet the Author Series: The Privacy Fallacy: Harm and Power in the Information Economy
Join us for a thought-provoking one-hour webinar with Ignacio Cofone, author of The Privacy Fallacy: Harm and Power in the Information Economy. In this session, Cofone will unpack the core argument of his book - that current privacy laws fail to address the real harms caused by data practices, and that these harms are rooted in systemic power imbalances rather than individual choices.
Attendees will gain insight into how privacy violations disproportionately affect marginalized communities, why common assumptions about consent and control fall short, and what a more just and effective privacy framework could look like. The session will include a live Q&A, offering participants the chance to engage directly with the author.
Presenter
Ignacio Cofone is the Professor of Law and Regulation of AI at the University of Oxford, Faculty of Law and Institute for Ethics in AI. He is also an affiliated member of the Quebec AI Institute and the Yale Law School Information Society Project. His research explores how the law should adjust to AI-driven social and economic change with a focus on accounting for nonmaterial data harms. His book, “The Privacy Fallacy: Harm and Power in the Information Economy” (Cambridge University Press 2023), analyzes the potential of privacy and data protection law to do so by restructuring them based on duties of non-exploitation.
