Research Spotlight Seminar
Tuesday, October 7, 2025 (9:00 PM - 10:00 PM) (EDT). Find time here.

The Oceania chapter presents this online seminar to showcase research in our region with implications for library and information science practice. In this session we feature are presentation, followed by Q&A on: Charting the future of library and information science in Australia and New Zealand through research, education and practice partnerships. This presentation will report on three workshops from 2023-2024 with over 80 participants from across public, school, and academic libraries, and educators and researchers from LIS schools, examining the state of LIS in Australia and New Zealand (ANZ), where there is a decreasing number of LIS programmes and ensuing concerns around the future of LIS Education, and consequently LIS Research and LIS Practice. Most participants indicated LIS education to be of the most concern, tying it in with consequences for future research and professional practice, with other concerns around government and university policies, funding and national research assessment exercises that sideline LIS. One of the strongest conclusions that emerged from all the workshops was the potential role of LIS professional associations in bringing together theory, praxis and education through engaging in more dialogue and broad consultations that are inclusive of contemporary societal priorities while ensuring a future for the discipline. Presenters: Dr. Edward Luca is Course Director and Senior Lecturer in Information Studies at Charles Sturt University. His research interests include metrification and academic work, scholarly publishing and academic librarianship. He is associate editor of the Journal of the Australian Library and Information Association (JALIA). Result of the South Asia Chapter Best Research Paper Award 2024-25

Congratulations Qazi Imran Ahmad for winning the South Asia Chapter Best Research Paper Award 2024-25 for their paper,"Everyday life information seeking behavior of transgender people in Pakistan". Ahmad co-authored this paper with Nosheen Fatima Warraich and Amara Malik.

The paper details (citation) are as follows: Ahmad, Q. I., Warraich, N. F., & Malik, A. (2025). Everyday life information seeking behavior of transgender people in Pakistan. Global Knowledge, Memory and Communication, 74 (3/4), 678-696. doi.org/10.1108/GKMC-01-2023-0024

This quantitative study explored the barriers in seeking everyday life information of transgender people in Pakistan. This paper is exemplary; authors put ground level effort to get responses from marginalized community and used distribution free tests for analysing collected information. Demographic characteristics of transgender people depict ways in which information providers and government agencies may improve information systems and services to better assist that special community.

After a year's gap the award call was floated and the Chapter received a number of papers from Bangladesh, India, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka. The submission count impressed the award committee!

Webinar: The Journey of Journal Publishing
Thursday, September 25, 2025 (1:00 PM - 2:00 PM) (EDT). Find time here.

Publishing a research article is a journey! We will discuss challenges and advice on preparing, submitting, and revising research manuscripts to increase the probability of acceptance at a top-tier journal. The insights are based on my experiences as editor-in-chief (EIC) of three journals, the first being Internet Research (Emerald, Impact Factor of 3.0 at the end of my tenure), the second being the interim editor of International Journal of Information Management ((Elsevier) and currently of Information Processing & Management (Elsevier, Impact Factor of 7.4). The focus will be on the mechanics of the journey, including cover letters, items on a manuscript checklist, what happens to your manuscript once submitted, handling communication with the EIC and other editors, the crafting of the response to the reviewers, the revising of the manuscript, and polishing the accepted article. We will also touch on the influence of citations, impact factors, and the contribution of reviewing the academic research process in what will hopefully be a discussion more than a presentation. The takeaways will be tactics to improve your chances for a top-tier journal acceptance.
