ASIS&T Africa Chairperson, Dr. Connie Bitso, Honored as Africa Librarian of the Month, June 2026

Our ASIS&T Africa Chapter Chair, Dr. Connie Bitso, was recognized as the Librarian of the Month for June 2026 by Librarian Spotlight Africa (LSA). Dr. Bitso serves as the Director of the University of Fort Hare Libraries, Chairperson of the SEALS Management Committee, and was elected CHELSA Chair-Elect on 23 June 2026.
As the June LSA honoree, Dr. Bitso was featured in a live interview on YouTube and LinkedIn on Saturday, 27 June 2026, where she shared her inspiring professional journey, from beginning her career as a classroom teacher to becoming one of Africa's respected library and information professionals. Throughout her career, she has made significant contributions to teaching and learning, research, postgraduate supervision, and academic library leadership at one of Southern Africa's most distinguished universities.
Under Dr. Bitso's leadership of the ASIS&T Africa Chapter, the chapter has experienced remarkable growth and innovation. She spearheaded the development and implementation of the chapter's operational plan, which introduced several successful initiatives, including the PhD in Three Minutes Competition, the Chapter Logo Design Competition, and a collaborative Africa Day celebration held on 25 May 2026. One of the highlights of the Africa Day commemoration was an engaging discussion of an important open-access book on advancing social justice through curriculum realignment.
The book discussion was particularly noteworthy for several reasons. First, the book brings together contributions from scholars across the globe, offering diverse perspectives on curriculum transformation and social justice. Second, it is edited by two distinguished African scholars, Dr. Andiswa Mfengu and Dr. Reggie Raju, both active members of the ASIS&T Africa Chapter. Third, as an open-access publication available in multiple languages, it is freely accessible to readers worldwide, thereby extending its reach and impact.
Having had the privilege of serving as the immediate Past Chair of the ASIS&T Africa Chapter, I have worked closely with Dr. Bitso and continue to be inspired by her positive attitude, visionary leadership, meticulous planning, and exceptional work ethic. One quality that stands out is her inclusive leadership style. She consistently consults with fellow chapter officers, values their ideas, and openly acknowledges their contributions to the chapter's achievements. This collaborative approach has strengthened the chapter and fostered a strong sense of teamwork among its members.
One of Dr. Bitso's guiding principles is simple yet profound: "Consistently work towards building a good reputation and trust." It is a philosophy that she not only shares but exemplifies through her leadership and professional conduct.
