Webinar: Classification as Outreach
Sponsored by: SIG Classification and Metadata Research (SIG CMR)
Drawing on Tina Gross and Violet Fox’s 2019 “Authority work as outreach,” this talk will explore how inviting community into classification work can strengthen our relationships as well as our systems. I will detail a set of related projects in which community-centered collections engaged users in assessment, revision, and direction for classification and labelling work. I pose this form of collaboration as an approach to scaling and sustainability that sharply contrasts computational or automated means.

Julia Bullard
Julia Bullard is an Associate Professor at the UBC School of Information where she examines how metadata and vocabulary design (mis)represents communities and their materials. Her ongoing work focuses on how catalogues can more fully represent LGBT2QIA+ communities and how terms related to identity are included and revised in standardized and community-centred systems.
