THE Standards committee voted YES with comments on

ISO/PWI 25293, Transliteration of traditional Mongolian script into Latin characters

ISO/PWI 25293 , Information and documentation — Transliteration of traditional Mongolian script into Latin characters is out for ballot to approve it as a new work item for TC 46. 

Comment:

As stated in the current proposal, “A listing of relevant countries which are not already P-members of the committee” include
China and Mongolia, which has different format for Mongolia (e.g., top-down or not), even though Latin-script transliteration scheme has been used. “The Committee Manager shall distribute this NP to the ISO members of the countries listed above to ask if they wish to participate in this work”.  After their draft, with the countries who use Mongolia, the people in the world can decide if this should be moved on into a real standard. Then, this proposal can move ahead to stage 30.00.]

This provides guidelines for the archival community in collecting and reporting statistics

The Standards committee voted Confirm on

ISO 18461:2016 (vers 2), International museum statistics

This International Standard specifies rules for the museum community on the collection and reporting of statistics. It provides definitions and counting procedures for all types of resources and services that museums offer to their users.

It is recognized that not all measures specified in this International Standard can be collected by museums of different type and size. The aim is to ensure that, where a particular statistic is collected, the same definitions and methods are used.

This International Standard is not intended to exclude the use of methods not specified in it. There are many different types of museums, with different tasks and audiences, having a range of unique characteristics (structure, funding, governance, etc.), and affected by a number of situational factors. Since there is such a wide variation around the world, it is important to understand that not all methods described in this International Standard may be required by or useful to all museums.

ISO/DIS 233-1, Transliteration of Perso-Arabic characters into Latin characters — Part 1: Arabic language

This document establishes a system for the transliteration of Arabic characters into Latin characters used to write the Arabic language. This modification of the stringent rules established by ISO 233:1984 is especially intended to facilitate the processing of bibliographic information (e.g. catalogues, indices, citations, etc.).

We have some basic comments. Are these based on some focused domains/applications? Looks like standards included/used by this Part 4 are not really ‘standards’. [See the list in 5.1 Collection of metadata element sets.] They should consider the ones already adopted by communities and societies, especially the ISO standards (including DCMI terms. See https://www.dublincore.org/specifications/dublin-core/).

This document establishes a system for the transliteration of the Persian characters (often called Perso-Arabic script) into Latin characters. This modification of the stringent rules established by ISO 233 is specifically intended to facilitate the processing of bibliographic information (e.g. catalogues, indices, citations, etc.).

ISO/CD 25279 International statistics for school libraries is out for committee comment.  This document specifies rules for the school library community on the collection, interpretation and reporting of statistics. The aim of this document is to provide a selection of statistical data that cover the current services and activities of all types of school libraries.
