In recent years, the scientific community has witnessed several high-profile research paper retractions resulting from evidence of scientific misconduct discovered after publication. This discussion emphasizes the critical role of academic and scientific integrity in advancing research and fostering public trust in scholarly work. Whether preparing a research manuscript or completing a class assignment, it is essential to properly acknowledge all sources of information, including journal articles, conference papers, presentations, book chapters, websites, images, and other resources. Through real-world examples of academic misconduct and retracted publications, this discussion examines common violations of research ethics and scientific integrity, illustrating how such practices can hinder scientific progress and undermine the credibility of research. The consequences of misconduct can be severe, affecting career advancement, professional reputation, and future research collaborations. With the increasing use of artificial intelligence tools such as ChatGPT and other generative AI technologies, the need for ethical scholarship and critical evaluation of information has become even more important. The presentation concludes by discussing best practices for maintaining research integrity in the evolving landscape of AI-assisted learning and research.

As emerging technologies continue to shape everyday life, older adults are experiencing both new opportunities and real challenges. We’re starting to see that tools like mobile apps, personal intelligent agents, AI, and virtual reality can play an important role in supporting independence and reducing social isolation. At the same time, many older adults face barriers related to AI literacy, accessibility, usability, and privacy, which can shape whether these tools are seen as helpful or not. This topic connects closely with the mission of the ASIS&T SIG-III International Café, which brings together a global community to think about access, inclusion, and information equity. One thing that often comes up in these conversations is that people’s experiences with technology are not the same everywhere. They are shaped by cultural context, language, infrastructure, and other local factors. For older adults, these differences can be even more noticeable, especially across countries where access to digital tools and support systems varies widely. Looking at emerging technologies through an international and intercultural lens helps move us away from a one-size-fits-all approach. It pushes us to think more carefully about how technologies are designed and used in different communities. In this way, the International Café creates a space for sharing perspectives, learning from each other, and exploring how we can make these technologies more inclusive for older adults around the world.

A Conversation with a Cup of Tea: Can Conversations Change the World?

The ASIS&T SIG-III International Café Meet, held on March 11, 2026, brought together participants from around the world for a thoughtful and engaging discussion on the power of conversations.

The Café Meet was led by Professor Ajith De Alwis, University of Moratuwa, Sri Lanka, who shared insights on how meaningful conversations can shape ideas, influence communities, and contribute to broader social development. Drawing on real-world examples, the talk reflected on the historic Grand Café in Oxford as a space of intellectual exchange, along with examples from diverse social contexts.

At the heart of the session was a compelling question: Are conversations the real key to development? This prompted Café participants to reflect on the role of dialogue in fostering understanding, connection, and meaningful change.

The event created a warm and interactive space for global engagement, with participants sharing perspectives, experiences, and insights.
