About SIG-III

The Special Interest Group for International Information Issues (SIG-III) was established in 1982. The primary objective of SIG-III is to apply the Association for Information Science and Technology's (ASIS&T) mission and vision to a global context. The SIG-III aims to achieve the following goals:

  1. Enhance the flow of information, worldviews, and contextual factors (e.g., values, norms, philosophies, lifestyles) from developing countries to developed countries through all the initiatives.
  2. Serve as a platform for sharing international information, knowledge, and skills for conducting and disseminating research that advances the information science field and addresses the field's challenges about major international information topics.
  3. Offer an inclusive and safe space to all ASIS&T members and stakeholders to exchange ideas, foster dialogue, and raise awareness of information science’s professional, technical, educational, and social issues, especially in developing countries.
  4. Engage ASIS&T members in international collaborations and enhance professional networking among ASIS&T members.
  5. Inspire and equip ASIS&T members, especially in developing countries, to advance their careers.

In pursuit of these objectives, the SIG has brought together a diverse group of researchers and practitioners from different parts of the world to examine various facets of global information issues.
